1982 was the year...
 

UB40 the internationally acclaimed reggae band staged concerts in major cities in the country, with the single One in Ten popular on all radio stations and bellowing through township streets - The Country was euphoric at the peace and new beginnings of the early 1980s.

 

Kwaziso - Ukubingelelana on Radio 2, was one of the most popular and long running programmes on the station. It appealed to all age groups providing listeners with the opportunity to write in or call and greet friends and relatives throughout the country. Several presenters such as Brenda Moyo and Eric Knight launched successful careers through this program.

 

The 11th and 12th of August were officially proclaimed as holidays to mark National Heroes Day and Defense Forces Day respectively.

 

A fourth Radio station, Radio 4 was established with the aim of providing educational programmes.

 
New beginnings.. throughout the early 1980s the country had a feeling of renewal and growth. After years of fighting, the country was euphoric with the pride of its new found youth. In those days the general mood was that the future was nothing but bright.
 

The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe, MMCZ was established by an Act of parliament, and tasked with effectively market all minerals produced in Zimbabwe.

 

Leading Bulawayo singer, Lovemore Majaivana through his music, breaks down language barriers through his Ndebele songs this year with the smash hit song Isitimela.

 

Bowler Flo Kennedy, Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, leader of the Triples Zimbabwe team in Brisbane, Australia, was nominated three times for the top sporting trophy is this year. Flo Kennedy was the first bowler in the country to ever win the sports person of the year award.

 

A discovery of arms on ZAPU owned properties resulted in the confiscation of the same by government. ZAPU leader Joshua. Nkomo and four other ZAPU cabinet ministers are relieved of their duties following the discovery.

 

The remains of the Jason Moyo and Josiah Tongogara were brought back from Zambia and Mozambique respectively, and reburied at the newly constructed Heroes acre.

 

The passage of the Legal Age of Majority Act granted black women contractual capacity as soon as they attain the age of 18.
