Uzalo Loses Millions Of Viewers As Ratings Drop
Mzansi’s most-watched soapie Uzalo has lost millions of viewers since it introduced a Gender-Based Violence storyline.
According to TVSA September primetime viewing figures, the show dropped by over a million between June and September.
Uzalo was sitting on 8,024,208 viewers in June and has now dropped to 6,879, 581 in September.
Nomfundo Zondi who is the spokesperson for Uzalo told Daily Sun that the soapie remains the most-watched in the country even though the numbers have dropped.
“Viewers are still enjoying Uzalo. Reaching 10 million was a miracle.”

“We made history. With the interesting upcoming storyline, we believe we are going to gain more viewers.”
The show is also introducing veteran actor and motivational speaker, Patrick Shai in November for a cameo role.
His character will get involved with the Njeza and Nosipho’s GBV storyline and will make a debut on 8 November.
The former Skeem Saam actor is the founder and director of Khuluma Ndoda which is an organisation that encourages men to speak out against gender-based violence.
Zondi said Shai will be joining the soapie to inform and educate viewers about GBV.

“We have a storyline where a boyfriend (Njeza played by Nkanyiso Makhanya ) abuses his girlfriend (Nosipho played Nompilo Maphumulo).”
“Gender-based violence is a huge issue in Mzansi, and we had to do something about it, like the show.”
Zondi also said viewers will see Patrick Shai talking to the men of KwaMashu and pleading with them to protect their women.
“We hope that with this storyline, there will be a decrease in the number of gender-based violence incidents.”
